Choosing the right security screens to protect your home and your family is an important and worthwhile investment so it pays to do your research. Cost can vary depending on product range, size of opening and your unique requirements.
How much do security screens cost?
As a general guide, homeowners in Brisbane can expect to pay anywhere from $800 to $1,800+ installed for a standard security door, while security window screens typically range from $250 to $900+.
The cost of a security screen should be secondary to its safety & efficiency. Below is an indication of pricing for a standard size hinged door (820 x 2100):
- $500-$600 cheap barrier door, single lock, non-security
- $800-$1000 entry level security door, triple lock, diamond grille
- $1200-$1400 mid range security door, triple lock, perforated aluminium
- $1400+ top of the range security door, triple lock, stainless steel mesh

Size is a main factor when it comes to the cost of a security screen.
Security Window Screen Pricing
Security window screens generally range from:
Large or custom windows: $600–$900+
Large openings, special colours and custom installation requirements may increase pricing.
Small windows: $250–$450
Medium windows: $350–$650
Please bear in mind that this pricing is based on your home being located within the Brisbane suburbs. Regional/Rural areas with a longer travel time for installation may cost more.
It’s difficult to put a price on the protection of your home. The peace of mind knowing you and your family are safe and secure is priceless.
What you should know about Australian Standards
Australian Standards for security screens have recently been updated to provide clearer classification of security performance.
To more accurately gauge a screen’s resistance to attempted entry with force, two new Dynamic Impact testing categories – SL100 and SL200 – have been added to the Australian Standards.
In addition to these classifications, security screens must still comply with the relevant Australian Standards governing manufacture, testing and installation.
These include:
- AS5039.1 – Classification & Performance
- AS5039.2 – Installation
- AS5039.3 – Methods of test
In addition AS 5040 specifies the installation of security doors and windows. AS 5041 includes the tests security doors and windows must undergo
Screens that do not pass these standards are classed as ‘barrier’ or ‘safety’ and are not security. The easiest way to check if your screen is in fact classed as security is to look for a compliance label or ask the supplier if their products are labelled compliant.

AS5039 covers the ability of screens and grilles to resist attempted break-ins. It should be very difficult or impossible to slice through a screen or penetrate a grille. AS5040 is concerned with the installation of security doors and windows. They should be installed in such a way that an intruder cannot pry off hinges and gain access to the house. AS5041 covers the tests that security doors and windows must undergo to be classed as security. The tests include:
- A dynamic impact test
- A jimmy test
- A pull test
- A probe test
- A shear test
- A knife shear test
The tests are designed to test a security screen against all types of break-ins. While it might be possible to get through a security door or window, it can be extremely difficult and most intruders wouldn’t spend the time it would take to penetrate a security screen.

Why Do Security Screen Prices Vary So Much?
At first glance many security screens may look similar. However, differences in materials, hardware, manufacturing and installation methods can have a significant impact on security, durability and price. The quality of the components hidden from view is often what separates a premium security screen from a budget alternative.
A few key components that can impact the price of your security screen include:
- Triple locks – secure the door at multiple points and make forced entry more difficult.
- Interlocks and receivers – help stop sliding doors from being lifted, pried or forced apart.
- Jamb adaptors – may be required for non-standard, out-of-square or pivot door openings.
- Retrofit tracks and custom extrusions – help the screen fit securely into existing doors or windows.
- Colour matching – premium powder coating helps match existing aluminium frames.
- Frame construction – welded corners are generally stronger and more seamless than screw or rivet-fixed frames.
- Mesh grade – 316 marine grade stainless steel offers better corrosion resistance than lower-grade 304 mesh, especially in coastal areas.
These are often the areas where cheaper quotes save money. While they may not always be obvious at first glance, they can make a big difference to how secure, durable and reliable your screen is over the next 10–20 years.
Other important factors to consider
Warranty
It pays to read the fine print.
- What does the warranty cover?
- Do you have to register the products for the warranty or are you automatically protected as soon as the products leave the factory?
- Does the warranty offer full replacement (new for old) or just a repair?
- Will you be without your screens while repairs are undertaken and how long will the repairs take?
- Are there any strict cleaning guidelines to maintain the warranty?
- What if the business who installed the screens no longer in business? What happens to the warranty?
Premium products such as Prowler Proof security screens are backed by industry-leading FULL REPLACEMENT warranties for additional peace of mind.
