4 Practical steps to improve your Home Security

How To Improve Your Home Security

We all want to feel safe in our homes, but what’s the best way to achieve this? Here are 4 practical steps you can take to make your home more secure.

Let’s Start With Some Basics

  • Keeping your windows and doors locked and secure is the first step in improving your home security. Always lock your doors, windows and garage – even when you’re at home.
  • Don’t leave your garage door remote in the car or on display near the front door.
  • Avoid leaving keys or valuables near the front door or in an obvious place (such as hanging from a key fob). This makes it easier for burglars to steal them from outside and gain access to your house without breaking in!
  • If you have a ‘keyless entry’ car key fob then don’t leave it anywhere near your front door as they can be scanned from outside so that thieves can gain access without breaking into anything!

Install Security Screens

According to a survey conducted by Budget Direct in June 2022 61.5% of Australians had deadlocks on their doors over the past 12 months, closely followed by security screens on doors and windows. Installing security screens is a simple way to improve your home’s security. In addition to their ability to keep intruders out, security screens can also improve the liveability of your home by blocking out harmful UV rays while letting fresh air in during warmer months!

Install Security Cameras (CCTV)

As time moves forward security cameras are becoming a much more viable option for homeowners due to their decreased price and exceptional quality. Studies show that Security cameras (CCTV) are a great addition to both deter criminals from your home and overall increase the safety of your neighbourhood. One study demonstrated that the prevalence of CCTV in a suburb can reduce crime by 13% compared to other areas without security cameras at all.

Our Partners Smarter Homes Australia offer an incredible selection of smart home security options and have helped many of our customers put the final security touches on their homes. We’ve partnered with Smarter Homes Australia as they are just as passionate about security as we are. Their mission is to provide every home across South-East Queensland with security cameras to help deter unwanted criminals across the state. It’s a big goal but each week they are getting closer to this by expanding their offering and providing a great range to suit everyone’s needs. You can contact them on admin@smarterhomesaustralia or via their website www.smarterhomesaustralia.com

Get a pet

Dogs can be a great deterrent to criminals, especially if you have a large dog. They are also very loyal and protective of their owners, which makes them ideal pets for people who want to feel safer in their homes.

If you’re looking at getting a dog for your home, why not consider rescuing your new best friend? There are great charities out there such as RSPCA and Death Row Unchained with many dogs currently in need of care, why not reach out and see if there’s one that suits you?

It’s important to remember, nothing is as important as keeping your doors locked and your valuables secured. The most important thing we can do both for our suburb and as homeowners is to secure and deter any unwanted visitors in as many ways as we can. Now is also a great time to join your local neighborhood watch. Most suburbs across South-East Queensland have a dedicated page on Facebook, you can find these using the search function and looking under groups and pages. If you are having trouble finding any neighborhood watch pages, please contact us directly so we can point you in the right direction.
